German Spelling When to Use s, ss or
If you first learned German before 1996, you may not be aware that the German spelling has undergone a number of reforms, changing the spellings of words you may be familiar with. For many German speakers, it was hard to let go of certain old spellings, but some German teachers may argue that the reforms have not gone far enough. For instance, it is still difficult for beginner students to sort out when to use s, ss, or ß in a German word. Keep track of when to use s, ss, and the infamous ß using this handy guide, but beware of the exceptions! Single ââ¬âs At the beginning of words:der Saal (hall, room), die Sà ¼ÃŸigkeit (candy, sweet), das Spielzimmer (playroom)Mostly in nouns, adjectives, adverbs and a few verbs when preceded and followed by a vowel:lesen (to read), reisen (to travel), die Ameise (ant), gesà ¤ubert (cleaned)ââ¬â¹Exception and Examples: die Tasse (cup), der Schlà ¼ssel (key); some common verbs - essen (to eat), lassen (to let), pressen (to press), messen (to measure)After consonant -l, -m, -n, and -r, when followed by a vowel:à die Linse (lentil), der Pilz (mushroom), rà ¼lpsen (to belch)Always before the letter ââ¬âp:à die Knospe (a bud), lispeln (to lisp), die Wespe (wasp), das Gespenst (ghost)Usually before the letter ââ¬ât:à der Ast (branch), der Mist (dung), kosten (to cost), meistens (mostly)ââ¬â¹Exception Examples: Verb participles whose infinitive form have a sharp -s. Stacys Story There is Beauty in Aging - 1522 Words
Stacy* and I met with each other in her office on a Friday morning in February. She owns a small, quaint flower shop in a city about an hour south of Houston. Her shop, which has been in her family for almost a hundred years, had not yet opened for business that day. While Stacy prepared herself for our interview, I occupied myself by admiring the thick piles of paper on her work desk. She had invoices, emails, check stubs and letters of appreciation covering the surface entirely. Empty and half-full coffee mugs were placed strategically about the room in places ranging from the printer, to the floor, and I even spotted one six feet above the ground on top of the dark, wooden cabinetry that hovered above her desk. I hadnââ¬â¢t seen Stacyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Although many studies show that ââ¬Å"older workers are more satisfied with their jobs than younger workersâ⬠, some workers like Stacy ââ¬Å"may not experience the rise in satisfaction that is normally correlated with ageâ⬠(Bjorklund, 2011, p. 215). In Stacyââ¬â¢s case, satisfaction may have decreased due to several factors. Job satisfaction is directly correlated with the amount of years that a person has worked in a given job (Kalleberg and Loscocco, 2004). It is possible that, since Stacy has moved in and out of work, she has not accumulated as many working hours and has not experienced the same increase in satisfaction (Bjorklund, 2011). It has also been found that ââ¬Å"women who were most likely to be working out of necessity are less satisfied than their counterparts who worked more voluntarilyâ⬠(Kalleberg and Loscocco, 2004, p. 80). Stacy inherited her business at the age of twenty-five from her aging parents who were unable to keep up with the businessââ¬â¢ demands. Although owning the family business was not part of Stacyââ¬â¢s life plan, she felt she had no choice but to manage it for fear of her parentââ¬â¢s potential financial losses. Even after she and her husband felt financially stable enough to sell the business, Stacy felt like she had made a promise to her community and her employees to continue operating as one of the few family businesses in the city.Show MoreRelatedEvaluating The Viability Of A Business Idea By Providing An Overview4953 Words à |à 20 Pagesprocession. During the 17th century, artists were focusing more on emotion and drama, also known as the Baroque time period. The overall style of Baroque art in paintings is ââ¬Å"detailed realism in portraits, expansive landscapes, and a focus on the dramatic including the contrast between light and shadow and the use of rich, deep colors. â⬠(Minded, 2. 05) Vermeer worked mainly in the Dutch Baroque style and does a magnificent Job in portraying and bringing to life an everyday task in the life of a servant girl in The Milkmaid. Vermeer was well known for his painstaking attention to detail. For example, ââ¬Å"the Jug and hands of the servant in The Milkmaid reveals a number of enticements, created as the artist struggled to depict them convincingly.
