Stacys Story There is Beauty in Aging - 1522 Words

Stacy* and I met with each other in her office on a Friday morning in February. She owns a small, quaint flower shop in a city about an hour south of Houston. Her shop, which has been in her family for almost a hundred years, had not yet opened for business that day. While Stacy prepared herself for our interview, I occupied myself by admiring the thick piles of paper on her work desk. She had invoices, emails, check stubs and letters of appreciation covering the surface entirely. Empty and half-full coffee mugs were placed strategically about the room in places ranging from the printer, to the floor, and I even spotted one six feet above the ground on top of the dark, wooden cabinetry that hovered above her desk. In Stacy’s case, satisfaction may have decreased due to several factors. Job satisfaction is directly correlated with the amount of years that a person has worked in a given job (Kalleberg and Loscocco, 2004). It is possible that, since Stacy has moved in and out of work, she has not accumulated as many working hours and has not experienced the same increase in satisfaction (Bjorklund, 2011). It has also been found that â€Å"women who were most likely to be working out of necessity are less satisfied than their counterparts who worked more voluntarily† (Kalleberg and Loscocco, 2004, p. 80). Stacy inherited her business at the age of twenty-five from her aging parents who were unable to keep up with the business’ demands. Although owning the family business was not part of Stacy’s life plan, she felt she had no choice but to manage it for fear of her parent’s potential financial losses. Even after she and her husband felt financially stable enough to sell the business, Stacy felt like she had made a promise to her community and her employees to continue operating as one of the few family businesses in the city.Show MoreRelatedEvaluating The Viability Of A Business Idea By Providing An Overview4953 Words   |  20 Pagesprocession.
